The Chiang Mai storage problem nobody plans for
Most people who end up needing storage in Chiang Mai did not expect to. They arrived for a few months, liked it, furnished a condo properly, and then found themselves leaving for a season with a flat full of things and a decision to make. Sell it all, pay rent on an empty place, or find somewhere for it to go.
Why paying rent as storage is the expensive option
It is worth doing the arithmetic once. A furnished one-bedroom condo in Nimman or the Old City costs several times what a storage box costs per month. If you are away for three months and keeping the place purely so your belongings have somewhere to sit, you are paying a large premium for the convenience of not packing. Over a single smoke season that difference is usually significant, and over a couple of years it is a holiday.
The other cost: being tied to the same place
The less obvious downside of keeping a lease is that it decides where you live next. Plenty of people return to a condo they had grown tired of, purely because that is where their things were. Storing separately means you come back and choose again, with the whole rental market open to you.

- Kitchen equipment worth far more than it costs to store
- Books, instruments and anything that took years to accumulate
Timing matters more here than most places
Chiang Mai's departures and returns cluster tightly around the season. That means everyone wants a box in the same few weeks, twice a year. If you know roughly when you are leaving, book early. It costs nothing to reserve ahead and it means you are not packing at midnight before a morning flight.
